If you were to believe what you hear on TV, then you might think that the only way to make your kids happy is to load up the car and head off to Disney World. Luckily for your sanity, and your budget, this is not the case. There are aplenty of family fun activities that you can do with your kids that do not require hours and hours of planning, or tons of money. Without further ado, here are five activities you can do with your kids this summer that do not require a lot of planning.
1. Washing the Car
While it may seem like a chore to some kids, washing the car can be a blast for kids and is easy for parents! To get them started, you do not even need a ton of materials or equipment. Simply grab the garden house, a couple of buckets and some carwash sponges or towels. Tell your kids to get in their bathing suits so that they can enjoy the inevitable water fights without making too big of a mess.
2. Family Picnics
It has been studied and proven time and again that the act of eating together can greatly improve the family’s happiness overall, and has an effect in lowering teen alcohol and drug abuse, as well as improving kids’ academic performance. The trick is to get kids involved early in the planning process. Have them help you choose a location and menu, or if they are old enough have them create the meal and pack plates and utensils.
3. A Trip to the Library
Going to the library is a great choice for entertaining the kids during the summer. One benefit is that you rarely need to plan or prepare for the trip at all, save gathering any library materials that are due from last time you went! Most libraries even offer youth programs during the summer, allowing your children to earn points for every book they read, giving them a great sense of accomplishment as they expand their minds.
4. Camp Out
Yet another great way to keep the kids busy and out of your hair for a few hours (or maybe even a few days) is to send them camping. What kid does not like spending the night out in nature with their friends, telling ghost stories, and roasting s’mores. What’s more is you get to have a quiet house to yourself for the evening. Even if your kids are not the outdoorsy type, every child loves creating their own forts and tents indoors!
5. Medieval Times Exhibit
Yet another educational and entertaining activity that is truly fun for the whole family is to go to a medieval times exhibit or Renaissance fair. Your kids will delight in seeing knights in shining armor atop horses in their flowing caparisons. They will love experiencing what life was like back in the days of old, including eating with their hands and watching a real live jousting tournament!
